Wine, Water and Song

OTTAWA - On Friday, November 10, the Cantata Singers of Ottawa and WaterCan will be holding a joint benefit concert at Christ Church Cathedral (Sparks and Bronson). The evening, hosted by CBC Radio's Shelagh Rogers, will feature songs based on the theme of water to be performed by the Cantata Singers and several invited guests - including internationally renowned Countertenor Daniel Taylor. A wine and cheese reception will follow the concert.

Titled "Venite ad Aquas" (Come to the waters), this unique benefit concert is being held to support both the Cantata Singers and WaterCan. Cantata Singers of Ottawa is one of Canada's foremost choral ensembles, well known for its musical versatility and dedication to promoting excellence in the choral tradition. WaterCan is an Ottawa-based, not-for-profit organization which funds clean water and sanitation projects overseas.

"Clean water is essential to life," says Christina Lubbock, Executive Director of WaterCan. "And yet, in many areas of the world, this basic necessity is a scarce commodity. Often, women and children must walk several kilometres to fetch the day's supply of water - water which is heavy to carry and usually not fit to drink. In Canada, where clean water is so abundant, it's difficult to comprehend. By holding this special concert, we hope to raise awareness of the desperate need for potable water overseas. WaterCan's proceeds will be used to dig simple but efficient wells and to teach better sanitation practices at our projects in Africa."

"We are delighted to be partnering with WaterCan for this important event," adds Laurence Ewashko, Music Director for the Cantata Singers of Ottawa. "Concert goers will be supporting two very worthy causes in one evening - local choral music and international clean water projects. In return, they will be treated to a wonderful celebration of water-themed music, including four commissioned works which will make their world debuts at Venite ad Aquas."

The concert will be followed by a wine and cheese reception. Tickets for Venite ad Aquas are available for $40 ($30 for Seniors and Students), by calling the Cantata Singers of Ottawa at 798-7113, WaterCan at 230-5182 or by visiting the following locations: HMV (211 Sparks or St. Laurent); St. John's Music (1771 Carling) or CD Warehouse (1383 Clyde). A charitable contribution tax receipt will be issued upon request for a portion of the price of the ticket.

Please contact Rhoda Boyd of WaterCan at 798-9138 for all media enquiries.
