Rossini: Petite messe solennelle

Saturday 22, & Sunday 23, November 2008

Our 45th anniversary season kicks off with a performance of one of Rossini's greatest choral works which, despite the title, is neither small nor solemn, ranging from hushed intensity to boisterous high spirits, with the rhythmic vitality for which Rossini was famous. Originally scored for accompaniment by two pianos and a harmonium, we will be performing it with accordion.  A rare treat!  With Michèle Bogdanowicz (soprano), Marion Newman (mezzo-soprano),  Michiel Schrey (tenor), Luc Lalonde (bass), Jean Desmarais (piano) and Alexander Sevastian (accordion).

Invitation from our Music Director

September 2008

see our director page

Dear Friends of the Cantata Singers of Ottawa

I would like to invite you to another exciting year with the Cantata Singers. In 2009 it will be 45 years since the inauguration of the choir, reason enough to make this 45th season a celebration! We have several great concerts ready for you, spanning the history of choral music, including every style and idiom, and featuring great soloists and instrumentalists.

Our 45th season celebration will take place on November 22 and 23 2008 with performances of Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle. For this special occasion we’ve invited a superb quartet of soloists, including former Cantata Singers’ member Luc Lalonde. Luc is in high demand as soloist, performing in Europe, Canada and the States, always keeping a soft spot in his heart for the Cantata Singers of Ottawa. We are very honoured to have him perform alongside our other guests, Michèle Bogdanowicz, Marion Newman, Michiel Schrey, pianist Jean Desmarais and accordion player Alexander Sevastian.

Our second concert this season, Shades of Love, will highlight some of the gems of a cappella choral music. We will spend a joyful, humorous, and entertaining evening exploring how love has touched composers and poets, and in turn, us – the performers and listeners. Come hear works by Dallapicolla, Monteverdi, Lauridsen, Sjolund, Whitacre, and Canada’s own Willan, and Watson-Henderson.  We invite you to share in the sometimes painful and sometimes joyous experiences of our poets in love.

As in every season, you can also hear CSO with the National Arts Centre Orchestra under Maestro Pinchas Zukerman. We are starting our season at the NAC with a performance of Mozart’s beloved Requiem. Please see our season program for more details.

I am looking forward to welcoming you in the audience and I appreciate your ongoing support for choral music and especially for the Cantata Singers of Ottawa. It is very exciting for me to start already my fourth season with this excellent choir. The ensemble has grown as a musical entity and is reaching new heights, on and off stage.

I sincerely hope you will join us for a season full of wonderful choral music.

With my best wishes
