Rachmaninoff’s Vespers (All-night Vigil Op.37) represents the culmination of a revival of interest in the music of the Russian Orthodox Church in the late 19th century.
The premiere in March 1915 at a concert raising funds for Russian soldiers on the frontline, was applauded by the critics and audience and received five repeat performances in the following month. The movements of the work are settings of the texts for evening office of divine worship and incorporates chants from either the Znamenny, Greek or Kiev traditions.
