September 2009
Dear Friends of the Cantata Singers of Ottawa
Tempus fugit – this is my 5th season with the Cantata Singers. I would like to briefly look back over our last four years of music making in Ottawa. I remember vividly the first concert that the choir and I prepared and performed together – the well-known Vespers by Rachmaninoff. In the many outstanding concerts that followed, we performed the central works of European and North-American choral literature. Our focus was and is the art of a cappella singing. In fond memory remain the Mendelssohn Psalms, the Gloria by John Rutter, or our co-production with the Vancouver Chamber Choir.
A unique part of our seasons has been the Soundscape concerts.
We
featured original music from Canada - remember the young
step-dancers and fiddlers? - , music from the Alpine regions (Yodel,
Alphorn and cowbells), and from Scandinavia. This season, we will
undertake a musical journey to Asia.
The Cantata Singers have been featured every season as the core group
of the chorus at the NAC. We performed under the baton of Pinchas
Zukerman, Helmut Rilling and Trevor Pinnock.
I am looking forward to welcoming you in the audience again, and I
appreciate your ongoing support for choral music and especially for the
. Our upcoming season includes a concert with the Capital Brasswork, a
musical meditation the week before Easter and many appearances at the
NAC.
I sincerely hope you will join us for a season full of wonderful choral
music.
With my best wishes,

Michael
Zaugg
